Stress and Recovery- How To Optimize Your Health

When thinking about how to get healthier the first thing you might not think about is stressing out your body.  What most people don’t realize is that there is good stress, positive stress that pushes the body to a new, healthier level.  If you are trying to optimize your health, start a new diet, lose weight or boost your energy you have to stress the body in a different way to cause a change, there is no other way to do it.

Do you ever talk to your friends who eat the same thing every day, or do the exact same workout every day?  Notice, for the most part that these folks are kind of stuck in their health, in a way they have plateaued.  Believe it or not the body does not like to be static, to have chicken a broccoli everyday for lunch, to do the elliptical trainer at the gym every day.  To optimize your health you need to have a sound stress recovery plan that works.

While most people might feel like the above picture when they think of stress, stress actually takes your body out of it’s comfort zone so it can create something new or different.

Results are created by a cycle of stress and recovery, here are a few examples which might make more sense.

  1. I do a 10 minute kettle bell workout every morning, I go really hard for 1 minute (stress) and then I do low impact jumping jacks for 1 minute (recovery).  Every morning I pick 4 different kettle bell exercises to do so my body doesn’t get bored.  After one month of this my body has adapted to the stress and is now able to perform at a higher level.  So now I do a 15 minute workout in the morning, I pick my exercise and go hard for 1 minute (stress) and then I do my low impact jumping jacks for 45 seconds(recovery).  The important thing to note here is that your recovery phase always allows you to recover before starting the next stressful phase.  If you don’t recover than you do not go on to the next stressful phase.
  2. A grand master chess player is required to make very strategic decisions and calculations in their mind in order to stay one step or 10 steps ahead of their opponents.  The competition can be fierce (stress) so sometimes the grandmaster will take a 10 minute break (recovery) so they can clear their mind and make the right move.  Over the years this 10 minute break will turn into a 5 minute break, and then a 2 minute breaks to where the body and mind have enough time to recover and then make the right move on the chess board.

You see we all have the choice to not push ourselves, our body or our mind but that is where we become stuck.  Over thinking often times results in being overwhelmed and taking no action at all.  No action means no stress and no recovery which the body thinks is pretty boring.

Do you think the best marathon runners one day just decide they are going to go from no exercise to running a marathon?  Of course not, if you have never run a marathon perhaps it is better to start off running for one minute (stress) and then walking for one minute (recovery).  If you overdo the stress on your body than you will have no chance to recover, and this causes serious deterioration of health, moodiness, chronic fatigue, headaches and more.

I encourage you to pick 3 goals or projects that you want to achieve and use this stress recovery model to take action.  For example start a weight loss program to lose 10 pounds, write up a new business plan, start eating a gluten free/sugar free diet.  Remember this is a marathon not a sprint so don’t try to lose 10 pounds in 2 days(stress) and think your body will be happy with that (recovery)

If you would like to optimize your health, relationships, business or wealth it is very important to have a stress recovery strategy.  You can decide today to conquer your goals or projects by pushing your body to the limits and then allowing it to recover.  When I talk about pushing the body to the limits I mean this is the most natural, holistic way possible so if you are concerned about exercise and stress you may want to consult your medical doctor before implementing a stress recovery strategy.

Creating Health, Are You Really Trying Hard Enough?

Today we are exposed to many different programs, supplements, medications, exercise program and diets that claim to be able to improve our health.  If you take on a health improvement program are you really trying hard enough, meaning are you giving the effort required to get results?

I believe I know the reason that most people fail or really struggle with improving their health, energy and vitality.  As a society we have tried to attach a quick fix solution to every single problem.  How many commercials do we see with “difficulty losing weight”, “are you depressed”, “do you have erectile dysfunction”, “do you have problems sleeping at night”; all of these problems come with a quick and easy solution which is usually some kind of prescription medication.  Quick fix!, is there anything really being fixed, is the root cause of the problem being corrected?

This brings me to the point of our we really trying hard enough to improve our health?  If we try and natural weight loss program and don’t lose 10 pounds in one week we get frustrated and end up quitting the program.  People who have chronic migraine headaches try natural strategies like food elimination diets and healthy supplements but if the headaches are completely gone in one week they quit and say it didn’t work.  Diabetics or people struggling with blood sugar might try eating more of a paleo or ketogenic diet to help regulate blood sugar, but doing so makes them feel a little bit grump or tired so they end of quitting after one week.

One week of not getting the desired results seems to be the max people can go before quitting.  How have people been so conditioned to expect quick fix miracles for serious chronic health problems that they may have been suffering with for 1, 5 or 10 plus years?  The headlines get us, the commercials get us; even if we have tried every other quick fix diet to lose weight and failed this new diet that Oprah or Dr. Oz is promoting is going to finally be the one that works!  Wrong, this diet did not meet your expectations so you quit after one week.  The stats show it, over 90% of people who do weight loss programs end up failing, meaning they gain all the weight back they lost plus some.

So why do we keep falling for this instant gratification type of health programs, systems or products?  Because they sound so good and so easy; they prey on our pain points, headaches, diabetes, chronic fatigue, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, erectile dysfunction, constipation or irritable bowel.  On TV commercials we hear a pain point  or symptom and shortly there after we hear a solution, we see how happy the patient is and how appreciative the doctor is; happily ever after right?  Wrong, how did we ever think that taking a medicine to feel better ever made us any healthier?  How can we ever deal with any of these pain points if we don’t correct the underlying cause of the problem.

Here are some common chronic health conditions, and an explanation on how complex they are and why quick fix just doesn’t cut it.

Weight Loss- this has to do with blood sugar regulation, diet modification, teaching the body to process good fats and protein instead of sugar, and good quality exercise.  Two things you need to lose weight: 1. You need to understand how the body works, digestion, metabolism, fat burning and fat storage and 2. You need to do a program long enough to correct the underlying issues.  Most people have been gaining weight for 10 plus years, you can’t reverse that in one week.

Headaches- whether it be a migraine or tension headache there can be several root causes such as food sensitivities, hormone imbalance, elimination issues, blood sugar dysfunction, stress, dehydration and other things.  This is why you can’t just take a pain pill to correct the root cause of a headache, that pill can’t take care of any of the above causes.

Reflux or Heart Burn- did you realize that your stomach is supposed to be pretty acidic, it actually produces hydrochloric acid to help with digestion and fending off bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.  The actual discomfort that one experiences with reflux is actually from food that is unable to be broken down in the gut; it produces lactic acid and this is what gives you symptoms.  So taking ant-acids may help you feel better, but by getting rid of the good acid in the gut you are unable to effectively break down and digest your food.  Unfortunately some people have been taking ant-acid medication for over 20 years; how do you think their digestive tract is doing?

In summary if you have a quick fix mentality you are not giving your body a chance to be healthy.  We need to get out of the mindset of winning, losing or quitting and embrace trying.  With winning, losing or quitting you have no chance at consistently good results.  There are too many ups and downs with winning or losing, you can’t win every time so when you lose you will be frustrated.  With quitting you are always losing and most likely you will start another diet, exercise program, or health improvement program and quit after a week of not getting the desired result.  Trying on the other hand does not guarantee success but at least you are taking action and moving in the right direction.  Trying means seeing how you body changes on a new diet after 1 week, 3 weeks, 2 months and beyond.  Trying means doing high intensity low impact exercises every day for 10 minutes, after 30 days doing it for 15 minutes and after a year teaching it to others.

Give the effort, don’t let anyone or anything get in your way and you will see amazing changes in your health, energy and vitality.

Taking Action To Lose Weight, Today Not Tomorrow


When people think about improving their health, whether they realize it or not it is about improving how their body functions.  I know today most people think of being healthy as looking good and feeling good, but that is not the best indicator of optimal health.  What I mean by improving function is boosting the health of all cells, tissues, organs and glands of the body.  The best time to start functioning better is today, not tomorrow, without taking little actions every day you are going to see zero results.

For example a healthier pancreas allows you to regulate blood sugar better and have more energy, a healthy liver allows you to detoxify easier, a proper functioning thyroid gland helps balance out all the other hormones in the body.  So in reality all of the health improvement programs we engage in help to improve how the body is functioning so that you will look better, have more energy, digest food properly, get solid sleep, have hormonal balance, and heal and repair like we are supposed to.

So stop worrying about getting going or all of the challenges that might come your way, just do it.  Try one or all three of these things and see how your body responds, you have nothing to lose.  Take little actions today like cut your carbohydrates in half, drink half your body weight in ounces and do some intense exercise for 10 minutes.

What ever health challenge you are taking on there is a big emotional component that is rarely talked about.  The sooner you accept and embrace it the easier you will be able to lose weight, boost your energy, exercise or start a new diet.

So when is the perfect time to start improving your health or improving the function of your body.  There is no perfect time or perfect scenario to start a weight loss or exercise program, just take little steps today and stop putting it off until tomorrow.

Most American’s fail at weight loss because when it really comes down to it; they do not have the motivation or good enough reasons to do it.  This is why over 90% of weight loss programs fail, people can do it for a short time period and then they lose their excitement, or their reasons for losing fat are just not BIG enough.  Today you need to write down the MAJOR reasons that you want to lose fat or lose weight, do it today and not tomorrow.

For this exercise think about: What keeps you awake at night? How is your family dealing with you being unhealthy or overweight? Look at your health right now, if you don’t turn it around how do you think it will look in 3-5 years?

Now for a minute, imagine you were super healthy, sculpted body, energized, just kicking ass whatever you did each and every day. What would you be able now that you could not before?  Besides just having a goal to feel better, what life goals could you now achieve being a lean, mean, energized machine? Ie. quality family time, new job, more productive, retire and travel.  Write them down TODAY, not tomorrow.

Realize that without the emotional commitment, the diet modification, meditation and new exercise routine are not going to give you lasting results. You need to hear this first and foremost when getting involved in any kind of energy boosting weight loss program.  If you do not take this part seriously than you will most likely end up going from quick fix program to the next and newest quick fix weight loss program.  If you have gone down this unfortunate path, just know that you are not alone, millions of people every year fail at weight loss because their reasons to get healthier are not big enough and they lose emotional interest.  Get your “big picture” reasons written down today, do not put it off until tomorrow.

If there is one thing you learn from this article is to take action today, no matter how small or how insignificant it might seem… take action today!

Taking Action Or Be Miserable

American’s are struggling with their health today, their is no question that we are seeing a higher incidence of chronic health conditions than ever before.

So what do I mean by chronic health conditions?  Health challenges that are not going away, maybe you have been suffering with them for one year or 30 years.  This can be anything from diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, weight gain, reflux or migraine headaches.

So if millions of people are suffering with chronic health conditions and year after year this number keeps getting higher; how do we stop it?  To better explain this we have to be aware of the healthcare system today, it’s approach and how that compares to holistic medicine.

Medicine is a necessity for infections, surgeries and other emergency procedures, living in the United States we are very lucky to have access to this.  What most people don’t realize is that chronic health conditions do not respond well to medicine, meaning that although you might feel better you are not getting any healthier.  For example if you have gastric reflux you may take an ant-acid or the purple pill daily to help you feel better, you could take this medicine for 20 years but if you forget to take it for 2 days; guess what? It comes back with a vengeance.  Migraine headaches, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are in the same boat, the medicine is never dealing with the root cause of the problem, so nothing is being fixed or corrected.

This is how the healthcare system has worked for the past 50 years, in the early 1900’s doctors would give medicine for a week or two and that was it; now you could be taking that same medicine for 30 years.  This is why many people still struggle with their health and feel miserable; some might call it bandaid medicine or quick fix medicine and there is no such thing.  Here the patient is taking no action to get better, they are only relying on prescription medications to get them better and they are not getting any better.

Compare that with holistic medicine, professions such as chiropractors, naturopaths, nutritionists, functional medicine doctors and osteopaths all practice a more alternative healthcare model.  Here the professional with take one through a series of tests to determine to the best of their ability what is causing the root cause of the problem.  You know when you are having car trouble they will connect your car to a computer to find out where the issues are happening and how to fix it.  Would you like the mechanic to fix or replace a faulty part in your car or just have them duck tape it so it could last for a couple more weeks?

Holistic medicine holds the patient accountable in a way, here is what needs to be fixed and here is how we are going to do it.  The patient will have to make better health and lifestyle choices in order to help the body heal and repair itself.  So if you go to a holistic doctor you can either take action or continue to be miserable; the choice is up to you but now you at least know what to do to get healthy.

Improving your health takes massive action on one’s part, there is no taking a medicine, sitting back and waiting to get healthy because it never happens.  Getting healthier is not difficult on the contrary it is very easy; you just have to make good, healthy choices daily.  If you go from eating fast food 3 times a day to eating real food 3 times a day you will see a significant change in your health; it’s not rocket science.  Don’t wait for the perfect time to improve your health because it never will come, just decide to take small action steps daily and you will reach a new level of energy and vitality.

Feeling healthier or feeling better, what exactly does that mean?  There has been a misunderstanding for years that looking good and feeling good means that you are healthy.  Instead lets think of optimal health as all cells, tissues, organs and gland functioning at the highest level.  When your body is functioning at the highest level you will notice a boost in energy, less aches and pains, better digestion, quality sleep, and a leaner body.  Remember that functioning on the highest level takes years of investment into your health, you don’t get it from taking an energy drink or supplement.

So make the decision today, take action or continue to be miserable; this may be the most important decision you make to turn your health around for good.

Your Health Is Your Greatest Asset, So Treat It That Way

Today when you ask 100 people what their greatest assets are they most likely will mention their house, car, family, IRA, business, even jewelry, but not many think of health as an asset.

If health is your greatest asset, why is nobody thinking about it or investing in it like we would a business, an IRA, a house or a vacation property. My guess is because we take our health for granted, we stress out about how much money we make, about retiring, about being there for our family, all along just hoping that our health can keep up.  Many people are waiting for the perfect time or opportunity to get healthy but that never seems to come.

Think about how many things you can do or how many goals you can achieve if you have poor health?   How well can you engage with your family if you are tired and grouchy all of the time?  How productive can you be at work if you are sick often or have brain fog?  If you have constant digestive issues; is there any way that you can enjoy your day or even go out to eat with your family? What if you wake up with a migraine headache every day, are you going to feel up to heading to work or taking your kids to school?  The take home message here is that if you feel lousy and tired all of the time your only goal is to feel better; bigger goals are not even on your mind.

So let’s compare that with having optimal health, feeling energetic and full of vitality. If you are struggling with your health right now; take a moment and just picture yourself being super healthy and energetic, maybe even unstoppable.  Keep that picture in your mind, and now think of all of the things you could now do or new goals you could accomplish because of your new found health.  This shows you why health is your greatest asset; without good health your life is very limited.

If health is your greatest asset than it is important to know the definition of health, which is the optimal functioning of every cell, tissue and organ of the body along with the absence of disease. Notice that the definition of health does not include anything to do with looking or feeling good, but rather the overall function of the body.  This definitely confuses some people because in today’s world of feel bad, go to the doctor and get a medicine; if someone is not feeling bad they think they are healthy.  Unfortunately that message couldn’t be farther from the truth, the most serious chronic health conditions often times do not show any symptoms such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.  These are the most common preventable cause of death in America, one usually does not realize they are sick until years down the road.  How many friends do you know who can’t lose weight for years and then all of a sudden they are diagnosed with diabetes?  How many people do you know that went to the doctor for something else and they found cancer?  Do you know of friends or coworkers who seemed healthy, they exercised all of the time and all of a sudden they have a heart attack?

Health is your greatest asset and these are the top ways that you can invest in that asset:

  1. Eat real foods, get rid of all fast foods and processed foods
  2. Exercise using high intensity, low impact workouts, even 10 minutes per day does wonders.
  3. Meditate daily, this is a great way to de-stress and your body will thank you for it.
  4. Have a positive attitude, positivity brings about more optimal health. I am not saying to sweep serious things under the rug, but to have some sense of dealing with challenges coming your way.
  5. Have a healthy support group, when people experience love and support they are always healthier.

Think of your body as a private jet, you need to give it premium jet fuel to make sure it can do it’s job, not just an average job but an exceptional one. Start thinking about investing in your health as something fun and not something that you dread; you will see more significant health improvements with this attitude.
